About

The Kalamalama is a studentnewspaper sponsored by Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) and has been established as a medium of information for the HPU community: students, staff, faculty, alumni, prospective students, and parents, as well as members of the general community.  Its mission is to inform, educate, and entertain its readers.  It is produced by students and is training instrument for students interested in becoming journalism professionals.  It also serves as a forum for expression of opinions held by students, faculty, staff, and community.

Kalamalama means "bright light" in Hawaiian.  "Ka" means "the" and "Lama" means "Light."  It also means "the beacon of light in the darkness," and "the torch."

Hawaii Pacific University opened as Hawaii Pacific College in 1965, and four years later the school began a weekly newsletter called the "Midnight Oil," which evolved into the "Menehune," and later into "Ka-Lamalama" which became the school's newspaper in 1969.

In 1984, Kalamalama was defunct because there was nos upport for the paper.  However, it was resurrected in 1987.  Currently, John Windrow, Program Chair of HPU's Journalism Department, serves as Kalamalama's faculty editor.
